How to Make Personalized Wine Glasses

In less than 30 minutes, you can complete this simple DIY customized wine glasses project for a unique and refreshing wine drinking experience. It’s safe to say that when it comes to a nice project, I’m most likely to like it if it’s (a) simple to complete, and (b) affordable to construct, and (c) incorporates wine. It’s the trifecta of achievement! If you’re anything like me, you’ve definitely had your eye on some etched wine glasses in the past but haven’t been able to pull the trigger since they’re asking too much money for them.

For our wine glass etching project, we opted to continue with the traditional “CHEERS” and “GOODE WINE” messages.

Secondly, because these are permanent patterns, there should be no problems with the glasses being able to be washed and dried in the dishwasher.

Keep the etched design on the exterior of the glass in order to avoid stains from forming.

Dab the end of a toothpick in etching cream in a non-visible location and let it stay for 10 minutes before rinsing to make sure it worked.

  • Soap, lint-free cloth, plastic painting tarp, masking tape, rubber gloves, self-adhesive acrylic stencils, tiny straight-edge paintbrush, etching cream, etc.

Step 1: Wash the wine glasses with dish soap and warm water to remove any residue. Using a lint-free cloth, thoroughly dry the surface. Step 2: Lay a plastic painting tarp over a work surface in a well-ventilated location and begin painting. Step 3: Stick the stencil to the wine glass with adhesive tape. Remove any air bubbles from the stencil with your fingers, then tape the glass around it to prevent any drips from falling onto the glass. Step 4: While wearing rubber gloves and using a small straightedge paintbrush, apply a thick coating of etching cream to the glass in the region where you are applying the cream (you should not be able to see the glass in this area).

  • To remove all etching cream from the glass, rinse it with warm water (from the top down) and then peel away the stencil and tape.
  • Step 6: Remove any etching cream residue from the stencil by washing it with warm water.
  • Allow for drying time before reuse.

3 Ways to Make DIY Personalized Wine Glasses – The Beginning Artist

Personalized wine glasses are a wonderful addition to special occasions such as weddings or as a thoughtful present for a friend. Yes, you may hire someone on Etsy to manufacture them for you, if you so choose. But, because making them is so simple, inexpensive, and enjoyable, why not do it yourself? In this tutorial, you’ll discover how to construct personalized wine glasses at home using three different methods.

1. Wine glass etching

Making decorative glasses that are dishwasher and microwave safe is a terrific alternative when it comes to decorating glasses. Although etched wine glasses appear to be extremely expensive and may be purchased for more than $10,- per glass on Etsy, it is actually rather simple to manufacture them yourself. It is possible to apply the etching cream directly to the glass with a brush, provided that you are confident in your brush strokes. However, most of the time it is simpler to utilize a vinyl stencil.

If this is the case, you may manufacture them yourself using a vinyl cutting machine.

You’ll need:

  • Wine glasses
  • Glass etching cream
  • Premium vinyl
  • Vinyl cutter
  • Protective gloves and eyeglasses
  • Transfer tape
  • Brush
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • And other supplies.

Directions:

  1. Find a design that you like and make it your own. It is possible to either find one on the internet or create one yourself using specialized art software. Make a cut in the stencil. You may use a Silhouette vinyl cutter or a Cricut vinyl cutter for this project. Premium vinyl is the most effective material for glass etching. Remove the parts of vinyl that are no longer needed
  2. Rubbing alcohol should be used to clean the glass. Using transfer tape, adhere your vinyl stencil to the glass surface. Make use of a scraper to ensure that the vinyl adheres to the glass
  3. Brush on the etching cream on the template using a little paintbrush
  4. Wait at least 3 minutes before continuing. Remove the etching cream by rinsing well with water. Remove the vinyl covering from the window glass

If you followed the instructions to the letter, you should now have some stunning etched glasses. It always amazes me how etching a cheap wine glass can make it appear significantly more costly, despite the fact that it is so simple. Keep in mind that putting the vinyl stencil to a curved glass surface might be difficult due to the nature of the surface. Consequently, it is preferable not to make your design overly large or elaborate.

2. Vinyl on wine glasses

Instead of using vinyl as a stencil, you may use a vinyl decal to adhere directly to the surface of your wine glass instead. You won’t have to worry about etching in this case. Although most vinyl on glass will be dishwasher safe (unless you seal your vinyl with epoxy), you will have to wash these glasses by hand because most vinyl on glass will not be dishwasher safe. Of course, if they have exactly what you’re looking for, you may purchase vinyl decals online. We’ll look at how to produce vinyl wine glasses at home from scratch in a moment.

You’ll need:

  • Wine glasses, permanent vinyl, a vinyl cutter, rubbing alcohol, and transfer tape are all things you’ll need.

Directions:

  1. Find or create a visually appealing design
  2. You may either import or duplicate your design into the vinyl cutter program. Make a cut in the stencil. You may use a Silhouette vinyl cutter or a Cricut vinyl cutter for this project. Permanent vinyl is the ideal choice for vinyl glasses
  3. Nevertheless, it is not always available. Remove all of the extra vinyl from your artwork
  4. Rubbing alcohol should be used to clean the glass. Using transfer tape, adhere your vinyl stencil to the glass surface. Remove the transfer tape from the surface

If you want to be sure that your design is horizontal before applying the vinyl, you can fill the glass halfway with water before applying the vinyl. The water will serve as a horizontal reference point for the project. As an added precaution, you may cut many small slits around your pattern to prevent air bubbles from collecting below the transfer tape. This is very beneficial if you have a large design to work with. Please remember that even if you used permanent vinyl, this does not necessarily imply that these vinyl wine glasses are 100 percent dishwashing safe, as some manufacturers claim.

It’s possible that they’ll last a few times, but the vinyl will shortly peel off. So either wash these glasses by hand or seal the vinyl with epoxy to keep them looking new.

3. Glitter wine glasses

When I first saw these glitter wine glasses at the store, I assumed they would be tough to make at home. But guess what?! They are not that difficult to make at all. It turns out that it isn’t all that tough if you have the necessary tools and supplies on hand. Let’s have a look at how.

You’ll need:

  1. Mark the outline of your design on the glass with tape, a marker, or a stencil. Brush on the mud podge to the glass using a little paintbrush. Glitter is sprinkled on top. Allow for at least an hour of drying time for the glasses. Apply a second coat of mud podge and glitter to the project. Apply a final layer of epoxy to complete the project. Allow for overnight drying of the epoxy.

See?! It’s not that tough, is it? In order to proceed to the following phase, you may either use a vinyl stencil (see the etched wine glasses) to create elaborate patterns with glitter or apply glitter to one side of the glass and permanent vinyl to the other half, as seen in the photo below (see vinyl wine glasses). I hope you’ll give one, two, or all three of these approaches for creating personalized wine glasses a shot of enthusiasm. It is a simple and enjoyable method to create gifts for friends, family, and even oneself.

It’s that simple! In other words, it’s that time of year again, when I’m caught between prepping for Christmas and enjoying Thansgiving (which is just around the corner!). However, you do not have to spend money on personalized wine glasses to give as thoughtful gifts to your friends and family members, or to decorate your holiday table as they are a gorgeous touch.

Personalized Glitter Wine Glasses – Detailed Written Instructions

There is a written summary card at the conclusion of this post, which is followed by a step-by-step video tutorial. Let’s get this party started.

What You’ll Need

Please keep in mind that this page contains links that will take you to my store area and/or another website. You should be aware that in certain situations, My Online Wedding Help will get a small compensation from the vendor when you click over and purchase a product. Having stated that, I was not compensated for using these things. They were all decisions I made on my own. The Decorative Elements

  • Glitter. Here’s the blend: it’s the purple glitter you see in the headline image, as well as the image at the conclusion of the post. During step 2
  • Rhinestone or pearl sticker border adornment, I include a link to the glitters in teal, turquoise, and silver that are shown in the video below. It’s a 1′′ tall vinyl name that I used in the video, and it’s in clear. Either create your own, like I did with a Cricut Maker machine, or purchase one. Alternatively, you may save time by purchasing your names already cut. In a thick typeface, 1′′ tall is the most convenient size

The PreparationApplication Materials

  • Template for a scalloped edge. You may get the pattern for free for personal use
  • Electrical tape
  • Mod Podge Hard Coat
  • Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe
  • And Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Mod Podges are dry to the touch in about 1-2 hours. ( In addition, in 28 days, you will be completely recovered from becoming wet. Please let me know if you try any other kinds of glue or sealant and how they work out!) Alcohol, cotton balls, a pen, a stack of paper, transfer paper or contact paper, and soft bristle brushes are all recommended.

1. Clean, Mark GlassApply Design Templates

Cleaning grime and oil from the glass is simple using rubbing alcohol. Apply a cotton ball soaked in alcohol to the outside of the glass and massage it in well. Allow for a few seconds of drying time. Afterwards, create a level circle where you’d want the top scallop design to begin and where you’d like the glittery bottom edge to finish. You may also use a water measuring device to determine the necessary levels of water and utilize it as a reference. Draw horizontal and vertical lines on the glass.

  1. To attach the top scallop template as well as the bottom electrical tape, draw dots where you want them to go.
  2. After that, stack books and/or paper up to the height of the top dot to complete the stack.
  3. Repeat this process until you have marked the entire perimeter of the glass using the marker’s open tip.
  4. Design Templates Should Be Used Electrical Tape is a type of tape that is used to connect electrical components.
  5. Remove the backing off the scallops and position them so that they are slightly above your specified line.
  6. Then, using a cotton ball and alcohol, remove the marker lines off the paper.

2. Apply Two Layers of Glitter Inside Design

I use Hard Coat Mod Podge for the basic layers of the pattern in order to give it a more stable basis. The reason for this is that Minderella Creations employs this method while creating her resin-sealed spectacles.

  • Mod Podge should be applied in a smooth layer using a paintbrush. This is my favorite brush
  • It’s a little one. Glitter should be applied in a thick coating over the Mod Podge. It was necessary to alternate between this turquoise and this teal in order to get a subtle ombre effect. Allow 10 minutes for cooling. Remove the scallop template as well as the electrical tape from the project. Careful! The glitter is still moist and sticky. The reason for doing this so quickly is that I had difficulty removing the template in a neat line after the Hard Coat Mod Podge had begun to set. Because of this, it becomes rubbery and tugs at the glitter. Allow one hour for drying. After the first coat of Hard Coat Mod Podge has been applied, use a tiny brush to get the borders of your pattern
  • Lightly sprinkle a second layer of glitter on top of the first to create contrast. I used this silver holographic glitter and allowed it to dry for an hour before using it.

3. Apply Wine Glass Name and Rhinestone Decoration

The glitter has settled on your glass, and it’s time to dress it up a little. I utilized a vinyl name that I created using myCricut Maker to identify the product.

It measures 1 inch in height and uses the Pacifico typeface. Following the cutting, I weeded the vinyl in the surrounding area. As a result, the only thing that remained on the backing was the name. You may also get a domain name for a few bucks.

  • Transfer tape or contact paper should be applied to the front of the name. It should be burnished into the letters. By removing the transfer tape away from the vinyl backing, you may remove the vinyl name from the vinyl backing. The name should be removed along with the tape, if possible. Transfer the name on the glitter using a paintbrush. First, use your fingers to massage the name into the glitter as best you can. Then, using a fine weeding tool or a metal pick, assist the vinyl in separating from the transfer tape
  • And After the transfer tape has been removed, rub the name even more firmly into the glitter. Remove the rhinestone sticker ornament from its backing at the end of the process. To use, apply it halfway off the bottom edge of the glitter, and then blend it in.

4. Put Sealant on the Finished Wine Glass

Because this is a glass that will be washed, I used Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge to seal the outside of the glass. The last three coats of Mod Podge should be applied in the following order:

  • Apply one coat of Hard Coat Mod Podge on the name, glitter, and rhinestone sticker adornment before letting it dry completely. Put just a little more effort to get the sealer into all of the crevices and nooks of the décor. Allow for one hour of drying time before applying the first layer of Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge to the whole surface. Allow for 2 hours of drying time. Apply a second layer of Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge to complete the project.

Note: According to the manufacturer’s instructions, both varieties of Mod Podge require four weeks to cure completely. Usually within an hour or two, they will be dry to the touch. And within a day or two, you’ll be back to your old self. Keep moisture away from the outside of the glass for the whole four-week period if you don’t want it to become sticky. After that, it is theoretically dishwasher-safe, according to the manufacturer. However, I am concerned about all of the empty areas around the decoration.

5. Tidy Up the Finished Wine Glass

If you’re anything like me, you’re not a natural when it comes to adhesive. That’s perfectly OK!

  • To begin, scrape off any extra Mod Podge sealant from the glass and surrounding your embellishments with a razor blade and/or a metal pick. Remove any leftover smudges from the surface using precision-tip cotton swabs soaked in nail polish remover to complete the cleanup.

You have completed your task. Congratulations! Here is a summary of the instruction that you may print off. Then there’s a step-by-step movie to watch.

Materials

  • FOR DECORATION: – glitter
  • – rhinestone or pearl sticker border decoration
  • The name is 1″ tall and is pre-cut vinyl. PREPAPPLICATION REQUIRED: -scallop edge template

My fascination with subtle frosted logos on wine glasses (such as the ones we used to get from local tasting rooms) prompted me to experiment with permanent designs on gifts such as spice jars and holiday tree ornaments. I’d heard about DIY etching several years ago but hadn’t tried it till this fall when I made a set of customized Mason jars as party favors.

  • The use of self-adhesive stencils is recommended.
  • A Silhouette Cameo vinyl cutter is available for use, and you do not require a particular certification to operate it.
  • You might also want bring your own sheet of vinyl, which you can find for $1.99 each at Michaels and other craft stores.
  • Michaels offers a whole section dedicated to sticky stencil patterns; just be sure you get plastic or vinyl decals rather than paper or screen decals.

To personalize your present, all you need is a bottle of etching cream, a brush, gloves, your glass item, and a stencil to get started. My recommendation is that you use sticky stencils (my handmade stencil is shown in blue; Martha Stewart’s stencil set is included in the kit). I recommend working on your project outside because the acid etching cream has a strong vinegar and rotten egg smell to it. Wearing gloves and an apron is recommended, as is laying down some paper or a disposable table cloth and having paper towels on available.

  • The stencil should be placed where you want your design to appear.
  • In the case that you’ve created your own stencil, make sure to leave a large area around the edges to prevent the etching cream from spreading beyond the region that you want etched.
  • Scoop the etching cream onto the exposed glass within the stencil and spread it evenly across the surface.
  • Place your glass on the table with care and let it to settle for two to three minutes.

  • Remove the cream from your glass piece by rinsing it under low pressure from the faucet, being careful not to splash it about.
  • The artwork should be properly washed and dried with paper towels.
  • You won’t need gloves for this step, but tweezers may be necessary to assist you remove the edges of the stencil material, especially if you’ve chosen sticky vinyl as your stencil material.
  • Be cautious not to get water inside an ornament or container with a lid; this is especially important for ornaments, which might take a long time to dry fully on the inside once they’ve been produced.
  • Your glass objects are now one-of-a-kind presents that will continue to bear your personalized artwork in perpetuity.

Please note that I used the number 14 as a placeholder; however, you may use whatever number you choose.

In this lesson, I will also show you how to personalize your wine glasses by adding a name or date to the bottom of the glass.

Also, I’ll go through one of the most often asked questions I receive when people ask me how to apply vinyl to wine glasses: “How do you apply vinyl to a curved surface?” I’ve got a terrific tip for you!

For this lesson, I’ll be using the Cricut Maker 3, but you may use any Cricut cutting machine, including the Joy, to complete the project successfully.

STEP 2: PREPARE YOUR DESIGN

The first step is to grab my Personalized Wine Glasses design from my free resource collection — look for design353 in the list of designs available to you. It comprises SVG files for cutting on a Cricut or other cutting machine, DXF files for cutting by hand, and printable PDFs for cutting by hand.TIP: If you are unsure about how to upload an SVG cut file to Cricut Design Space, watch this helpful video training series I created. My SVG file also contains six different reindeer.

Also covered will be how to employ glyphs to spice up your letters and make them stand out.

For this article, I will be using the Cricut Maker 3, but you may use any Cricut cutting machine, including the Joy, for the same results.

STEP 3:CUT THE PERSONALIZED WINE GLASS DESIGNS

As soon as we have everything set and ready to go, we will click on the “Make It” button located in the upper right corner of the screen. After that, we’ll cut out our drawings from construction paper. Select “On Mat” from the drop-down menu on the following page, if applicable. On the preparation screen, there is nothing that needs to be changed. As a result, we may choose “Continue” from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the screen. It is now time to choose the materials that we will use for our first mat, which will be our black eyes.

  • After that, I’m going to pick “More Pressure” in order to achieve a more precise cut.
  • Load your mat into the machine and press the flashing “Arrow/Go” button to begin cutting.
  • It is best to remove vinyl from a mat by flipping it over and drawing it away from the vinyl; this will avoid the material from curling.
  • To create this mat, I’m going to use Textured Metallic Vinyl (gold), therefore I’m going to pick “Browse All Materials” and then “Premium Vinyl – Textured Metallic.” Then click on “Finish.” Then click on “Again Pressure” one more.
  • Load your mat into the machine and press the flashing “Arrow/Go” button to begin cutting.
  • By flipping the mat over and peeling the mat away from the vinyl, you may remove the vinyl from the floor mat.
  • Using the same method as previously, put the teal vinyl on a Green StandardGrip Mat and burnish it down from the shiny side up.
  • After it has done cutting, remove the vinyl from the mat in the same manner as we did previously.
  • With the teal vinyl, use the same methods as you did for the black vinyl.

Afterwards, reload and chop your materials a second time. By flipping the mat over and peeling the mat away from the vinyl, you may remove the vinyl from the floor mat. Once the vinyl has been cut, you’ll need to remove any extra vinyl and WEED the whole area well.

STEP 4:ASSEMBLE YOUR PERSONALIZED WINE GLASSES

We’re going to put our wine glasses together right now. Before anything else, let’s clean the wine glasses by wiping them off with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free towel. This will clean the first, and I’m going to start with my adorable reindeer friend. The same approach applies to my “Cheers” design, which is a fill-in-the-blank template. Before we apply the vinyl on the glass for any of these patterns, we will cover it with parchment paper to prevent it from sticking. To begin, lay down a sheet of parchment paper the size of your work area and tape it down using painter’s tape to protect your work surface.

After that, we’ll cut a piece of transfer tape to the size of our entire pattern, which in this case will be around 3.5″.

Our decorations come first, followed by antlers, and last our eyes and nose.

Remove the backing off the transfer tape and apply it to the ornaments and nose piece, pressing it down with the scraper tool to ensure a smooth application.

Place the ornaments and nose on the parchment paper, leaving a little piece of transfer tape hanging over the edge of the parchment paper.

Burnish the ornaments into the parchment paper and use the transfer tape to secure the decorations to your work surface.

To finish, remove the parchment paper and use your fingers to rub the bow and nose into the antler piece.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll have the decorations, nose, and antlers on your transfer tape, along with the vinyl backing from the antlers.

Gently peel away the transfer tape, ensuring that the entire pattern is removed with it.

For this project, all you need is a pair of scissors to work its magic.

Transfer tape and vinyl may bend around the glass and curve to the surface as they are applied, which helps to prevent wrinkles in the vinyl as it is applied.

Make a circular motion with your finger or the scraper tool to burnish the vinyl from the center outward.

Place your wine glass with a roll of painter’s tape to prevent it from sliding around.

Because we cut the slits in advance to attach the vinyl on the glass, it is possible that it will come off in fragments rather than one piece.

Using a piece of transfer tape and a sheet of parchment paper, measure and cut out the pieces that will be used.

Take your red wine/year layer and apply a piece of transfer tape to it with your fingernail.

Next, put your black vinyl layer out in front of you and place a sheet of parchment paper on top of it to protect your work surface.

Then, align your red wine/year layer with the black layer and push the exposed part of transfer tape onto your work area to ensure that it remains in place.

Once the decal is in place, remove the parchment paper and use the scraper tool to burnish the decal into the surface.

As with the reindeer design, transfer the design to your wine glass using a transfer sheet.

Here is where we will utilize the water to ensure that our name is spelled correctly.

NOTE: Only use room temperature water since hot or cold water causes condensation, which prevents the vinyl from adhering to the glass.

After that, apply the transfer tape on top of the vinyl and buff it with the scraper tool to ensure that the vinyl adheres to the transfer tape.

Placing the bottom of your “taco” into the centre of your design is made easier by holding the transfer tape in the shape of a taco.

Gently peel the transfer tape away from the vinyl; it should come up with the transfer tape.

Once you have removed your image from the vinyl backing, create small slits around the transfer tape to allow it to pass through.

After that, we’ll utilize the waterline to assist us in placing our name in the proper spot and in the most straight line feasible.

(Except for the uppercase letter) Then, using your finger, smooth the vinyl down from the center outward, allowing the vinyl to glide into place.

Don’t try to push it into place either.

I do not advocate using Mod Podge to coat them since it produces a streaky appearance on the glass surface.

These may also be utilized as a display piece to wow your holiday guests and make them feel welcome. Simply attach a battery-operated tea light to one of the reindeer motifs and let the festivities begin! I’m looking forward to seeing all of your beautiful wine glasses.
